RSCDS - Twin Cities Branch 5th Annual Fàilte Ball

What is It?: "Fàilte" means welcome in Gaelic, and all Scottish dancers, beginners and experienced, are most welcome! The Fàilte Ball is intended to be a gentle introduction to the ball scene for newer dancers, and a fun night for all. Enjoy a scrumptious dessert buffet, live music, and dancing in a semi-formal setting. Never been to a ball before and not sure what to expect? Check out our guide for the neophyte ball-goer and then grab your ghillies and join us on the dance floor.

Tickets: $15.00
A discount of $5 is offered to those who are attending their first Scottish country dance ball.
Tickets for non-dancers are $5.

Other Activities:
  • There will be a ball walkthrough on Friday, December 7, 7:30 p.m. at Olivet Congregational Church (1850 Iglehart in St. Paul). An additional ball practice will be held on Saturday, December 9, starting at 10 a.m. at the Tapestry Folkdance Center.
  • There will be a potluck"after-glow" party at the home of Dan Grundtner. Bring a dish to share. Directions to Dan's will be available at the ball.

16 March (couple dance)
1-4 In allemande hold, walk forward four steps CCW around the circle. Turn and face the other direction and walk backwards (CCW)four steps.
5-8 Repeat bars 1-4 going CW.
9-12 Woman turns under the man’s arm while the couple continues to move around the circle.
13-16 Polka, moving around the circle.


Selkirk Reel
8x32 R 2C Stern/Let's All Dance
1-8 1C dance mirror FIGURES OF EIGHT around 2C and 3C on their own side of the dance. 1C dance in and down to begin.
9-16 1C DANCE DOWN for 3 bars, DANCE UP for 3 bars and CAST to 2nd place. Finish 1C facing 2C, nearer hands joined with partner.
17-24 As in "Jessie's Hornpipe": 1C form an ARCH and dance up, 2C dancing under. All turn toward partner to change direction. REPEAT the arches 3 more times (2 bars per arch), bottom couple always making the arch.
25-32 2C and 1C RIGHTS AND LEFTS.


Flowers of Edinburgh
8x32 R 2C RSCDS 1
1-8 1W, followed by 1M CAST DOWN behind 2W and 3W; 1W crosses and casts up behind 3M and 2M while 1M dances up the middle, both finishing in partner's place (6 bars); 1C set
9-16 REPEAT bars 1-8 with 1M leading the cast and 1W dancing up the middle to finish in original places.
17-24 1C DOWN THE MIDDLE AND UP..
25-32 1C and 2C POUSSETTE.

1-8 1C cast down the outside of the set and back to place.
9-12 1W & 2M set and cross RH while 2W & 1M cross RH and set.

17-24 1C lead down for 2 bars, turn RH for 2 bars, lead up for 2 bars, and cast into 2nd place.
25-28 2C & 1C set and turn partners with both hands.

1-4 All clap. 1C cross, passing right shoulders, and cast off one place.
5-8 1C & 3C dance right hands across.

19-20 1W & 3M change places giving RH while 1M & 3W loop around to the right to face back in.

* A popular variation: 2C join the petronella figure on bars 3-4. On bars 15-16 they loop back to the sidelines instead of setting.

1-8 1C, 2C, & 3C dance six hands round and back.
9-16 1C lead down the middle and up, ending between 2C with 1W facing 2M and 1M facing 2W, ready for . . .
17-24 1C & 2C dance a reel of 4 across the dance. 1C end on own sides facing up.
25-32 1C cast around 2C, dance down between 3C, and cast up around 3C to end in 2nd place.


Reel of the 51st Divison
8x32 R 3C RSCDS 13
1-8 1C set to each other and cast off two places (2C moves up on 3-4). 1C meet below the 3rd couple and lead up the middle to face 1st corners.
9-12 1C set to 1st corners and turn them RH, finishing by joining LH with partner, forming a diagonal line.
13-14 Balance in line.
15-16 1C (leaving first corners in place) turn 1 1/4 LH to face 2nd corners.
17-22 Repeat bars 9-14 with 2nd corners.
23-24 1C turn LH to own sides in 2nd place.
25-32 2C, 1C, and 3C six hands round and back.

25-32 All advance and retire, then pass through the opposite line of three to face the next line of dancers around the circle.


Lady Catherine Bruce's Reel
8x32 J 2C RSCDS Graded
1-8 1C lead down the middle and up, finishing ready for an allemande.
9-16 1C & 2C allemande.
17-24 1C dance a figure of eight round 2C
25-32 1C & 2C four hands round and back.


Saint John River
4x32 S 4C set New Brunswick
1-8 1W, followed by 1M, cast behind 2W, dance across the set and down behind 3M, across the set and down behind 4W.
9-16 1C dance up under arch made by 4C, turn 1 1/2 with both hands, and dance up to original places under arch made by 2C.
17-24 1C, followed by 2C, 3C, and 4C lead down the set. When 4C reach the top of the set, they cast off to own places followed by 3C, 2C, and 1C.
25-32 All dance back-to-back. 1C face down and chain down the sidelines, giving RH to 2C, LH to 3C and RH to 4C to end in 4th place.


Eightsome Reel

Part A:
1-8 All circle 8 hands round and back.
9-12 All dance right hands across as couples, with women on the inside and men on the outside of the wheel.
13-16 All dance left hands back as couples, pivoting to place men on the inside and women on the outside of the wheel.
17-24 Set twice to partner and turn with both hands (finish facing partner).
25-40 All dance a grand chain (2 bars per hand).
Part B:
1-8 Circle 7 hands round and back with 1W in the middle.
9-16 1W set to & turn her partner, then set to and turn her opposite (3M).
17-24 1W dance a left shoulder reel of 3 with partner and opposite.
25-32 Repeat bars 1-8 of Part B.
33-40 1W set to & turn the man to the right of her partner (2M), then set to and turn the opposite man (4M).
40-48 1W dance a left shoulder reel of 3 with the two men, ending in her original place and 2W ending in the middle of the set.
Repeat Part B seven times with 2W, 3W, 4W, 1M, 2M, 3M, and 4M in the middle.

25-32 1C turn 1st corners BH, dance round each other passing right shoulders, turn 2nd corners BH and passing right shoulders dance across to own sides in 2nd place.


Reel of the Royal Scots
8x32 R 3C RSCDS Leaflet
1-4 1W and 2W giving LH, 1M and 2M giving RH, TURN 1C to 2nd place, back-to-back in the middle of the set. Taking hands as if for double triangles, 2C, 1C, 3C SET.
5-8 1C retain hands with 3C and turn them into the middle to switch places with them. Taking hands as if for double triangles, 2C, 3C, 1C SET.
9-16 1C, followed by 2C, DANCE UP between the top couple, CAST OFF one place, DANCE DOWN below 3C's position and CAST UP, ending in the order 2C, 1C, 3C.
17-24 1C TURN RH with 1st corners, pass each other RS, TURN RH with 2nd corners, and pass RS to own sides in 2nd place.
29-32 2C, 1C, 3C CIRCLE six hands round to the left and back.
